Mac Haul: Creamblend Blush and Pro Colour x 4 Compact

Hi everybody! I met up the Sunday before last with a friend of mine (Helen, who recently did a guest post for me), and did a Mac haul (my first ever in-store!).

My Mac love has been quite recent, as I always kind of pooh-poohed the range, thinking so many limited edition releases from a brand could never be a good thing, an it must just be over-hyped. Oh how wrong I was.

I ended up buying a few blushes to try from a BrandAlley sale (keep an eye out, they do discounted Mac products every so often) and it was love at first swipe so to speak.

So when I was in Cambridge, and saw a Mac store, I bodily dragged poor Helen in, determined to try out as many products as possible.
The first item I wanted to try was a new blush. I have something of an obsession with Mac blushes, and am swiftly creating a major stash. I didn't own a creme blush, and wanted to try it out as I find powders, while lovely, often don't last very long on me, and I thought maybe a creme consistency would have more staying power.

I ended up buying Mac's Cremeblend Blush in LadyBlush, a beautiful dusky pink with a little peach added in.

Now before I go any further, I have to mention one thing: The Sales Assistant who 'helped' me was terrible. Absolutely terrible. Part of the reason I was so excited about buying from a Mac store was that I'd heard from so many friends how great the SAs are. How helpful they are, how they've been properly trained in make-up, so actually know what they're talking about. Oh the disappointment.

Deep down, I'm never sure I've quite chosen the right shade, so whenever I go into a store, there's a part of me that just wants someone to sit me down, pick out a product, and say 'THIS. This is your perfect product!'. In this little fantasy the SA applies it, shows me the mirror, and TA-DA. I am suddenly transformed into a Goddess, and leave the shop never having to buy another item of make up again.

Please tell me that's not just me?!

So on my way into the shop, this particular fantasy was going into overdrive. I'd just been paid a bonus from an event I'd done, and was more than willing to go wild (with buying make up. Not generally wild - I didn't go in with the intention of dancing on the tables and stuffing cash down the Sales Assistants' knickers or anything like that).
I walked in, wandered around for a bit, trying to catch someone's eye to no success - why is it that whenever you want to be left alone to browse, all the SAs suddenly really want to help you, and when you actually want to be helped, they don't want to know?!

So I picked out a few things myself, and toddled over to the nearest SA, asking if it would be alright to try some of it on. This is no exaggeration, she acted as if I'd asked her to sell me her first born child. I've never met a more reluctant, crabby SA in my life.

Conversation as follows:
Me: 'Could I try some of this on please?'
SA: 'oh.....Which one?'
Me: 'Erm...I was kind of hoping to try all of it, if that's alright?' (I had two blushes and a quad palette in my hand)
SA: '......ok then.' *leads me over to the make up station*

In total silence she applied a blush to each cheek.

SA: 'Right, which one do you want?'
Me: 'Ah, I'm not sure, they both look nice, what do you think?'
SA: 'I don't know'

I kind of awkwardly looked at myself in the mirror for a bit, pretending to contemplate, while she stood in stony silence.
I eventually went up to Helen to ask her opinion, at which point the lovely SA chatting to her gave me a complete pro's and con's list of the two blushes I was wearing.

I decided on the Cremeblush you see before you!

It's a gorgeous colour, and the (nice) SA described it as 'the perfect natural flush for your skintone'. It is very very natural, a kind of my-cheeks-but-better look, and being a creme blush, it's very easy to build the colour to get the intensity you want. And I was right, this is a lot more long lasting than powder, so I find myself having to touch up a lot less!

In the swatch I have applied the blush very heavily, so you can see the colour more easily, and just how much intensity you can get. This retails online and in-store for £17.50.

So, I went back to grouchy SA and asked if I coud try on the other item, a Mac Pro Colour x 4 Quad that had been pre made, named Call Me Bubbles.

The colours in this quad were beautiful, full of coppery pinks, which I'm loving for Spring at the minute.

You put the four shades in separately, which is neat as it means the palette is re-useable when you run out.

Conversation following request to try on quad:

SA: 'Which shade do you want to try?'
Me: 'Well I was hoping to try all four? I wanted to see how all four looked together? Could you show me what kind of a look I could create with the quad?'
SA: 'Right. Well, the pale white can be used as an all-over base. You can apply the two pinks in the crease, and then the gold over your brow bone for a contrast'

In fairness, she applied it like this, and it did look really nice, so I decided to take it.

At which point, the SA, instead of applying shadow to my other eye to even up the look, or reapply my other cheek with a matching colour, just wiped off the make up she'd applied. Amazingly enough, I left a Mac store with less make up on than I'd gone in with ^^;;;;;;

I took my purchases and left as quickly as I could. What's worse though, is that when I got home and looked on the Mac site, I realised she had majorly over charged me on the palette!!

On the Mac site, this quad is £35. When I asked her how much it was in store, she said it was £48!! As the stalls don't have the price of anything listed, and it was a quad with four separate shadows, I didn't question it, thinking, 'ah, it's mac, they're always pretty pricey'. I did balk at the price, and it meant I didn't purchase anything else, but I went in with the intention of blowing my bonus, so decided to take it despite the price tag.

Urgh, annoyingly there's no point in even querying this. The Mac store is in Cambridge, so an hour and a half train ride away, and I stupidly threw out my receipt on the train ride home!

Bah, oh well, SA blues aside, the make up I bought is beautiful, and Mac is undoubtedly very high quality.

The shades in the quad are (from top left going clockwise) Fresh Daisy, Full of Flavour, Brash, and Call Me Bubbles.

Fresh Daisy is orange with a Frost finish, Full of Flavour is coral with a Matte finish, Brash is a frosty reddish-copper with a Veluxe-Pearl finish, and Call Me Bubbles is light tan with a Satin finish.

This is a look along the lines of what the SA did for me, but with *much* heavier application so you can see the colours more clearly. In the shop it was applied with a stipple brush and a far lighter hand, so was much more natural. I'd probably only wear colours this bold for going out, or on the weekends if I was letting my inner child run free.

Verdict: My experience was somewhat ruined by a bad SA, but in all honesty, Mac has great quality products, and many of my friends have repeatedly said how great their SAs are. I think this SA just made a mistake with the price and was having a really bad day, so I will probably venture into a Mac store sometime in the future. The very distant future.

Places to Eat: Velo London

Happy Monday guys - that wasn't sarcasm, I'm actually happy right now because for the first time in over two weeks IT'S ACTUALLY SUNNY HERE!! Miracles happen.

If it's not so sunny wherever you are, I have something to cheer you up (or at least something that always cheers me up) - a post about really good food.

Last week, I discovered a Vietnamese takeaway right next to my work, and they had to scrape me off the ceiling I was that excited. I'd never properly tried Vietnamese, but I used to watch all these Vietnamese cooking shows, and have been pretty much obsessed for ages!
The Vietnamese takeaway I found is called Velo.
Now, despite drooling over all the pictures of Vietnamese cooking I saw online and on TV, I was still a little apprehensive, as I cannot eat spicy food AT ALL.
However, everything I bought wasn't spicy (the noodle dish had chillies, but the lady behind the counter very kindly had them taken off for me) just really really tasty.

I bought Prawn Summer Rolls for around £3.

These were absolutely gorgeous. All the veggies are raw in it, and it's full of rice noodles, and these massive kings prawns. It tasted like Summer, so fresh and healthy tasting (in a good way, not in a nibbling-on-rye-crackers-that-taste-like-cardboard-but-oh-well-it's-'healthy way)

They came with the tastiest peanut sauce too, and this had a little chilli in it, but just enough to give it a kick, nothing I couldn't handle.

I also bought a Pho Chicken (I was really hungry, ok?!) for around £5-6 and this was some tasty tasty soup noodle :D

It's full of rice noodles, omnomnomnom :9

If you're ever in London and fancy a takeaway that is fresh and healthy as well as delicious, then Velo is located on 104 Tooley Street, near London Bridge station!
And if my opinion isn't enough, there are reviews here and here.

I'm going back again today, I can see this developing into an addiction.

The Balm: Read My Lips Lipstick

Turns out I have more The Balm products than I thought!
I completely forgot that I bought The Balm's Read My Lips lipstick in Gossip from Cosmetic Candy's last blog sale!

Jump!
On The Balm's site it says:

Out with the old in with the new, well so to speak. These new editions are not your mama’s lipstick. Say bye bye to that bad lipstick taste and hello to these sheer, delicious, vanilla-mint tubes of heaven.

This creamy, moisturising formula has vitamins A and E along with olive and jojoba oil leaving you with a soft and sexy pucker.

I bought this not even realising it was from The Balm, but mainly because of the pretty packaging (unlike a lot of people, I have a real thing for paper packaging. Maybe from my long time obsession with Paul & Joe lipsticks..?) and that this was a colour very different to anything I already own. I have a bit of a phobia of bright pinks, and do I wanted to give something this frightening (at least to me) a shot. The picture actually doesn't show exactly how bright the tube is, so I've added a stock photo. The most accurate colour is somewhere between the two.

This is a pale pink with silvery sparkles in it. As adventurous a combo as this sounds, I was actually surprised by how wearable this shade was. I guess a clue's in the name (The Balm), as this is very like, erm, a balm. It's really sheer and moisturising, probably due to the jojoba oil, and doesn't offend my anti-bright-pink sensibilities at all!

As you can see, it's really very natural on, and I use this for a daytime, moisturised look.
This is a lovely product, but if you're expecting pigmentation, this ain't it! If a sheer, shimmery balm is what you're looking for though, this may be your guy.

Available for £11 on Bath and UnwindFeel Unique, and Amazon.

Urban Decay: Tease Lipstick

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend!

I wanted to share a lipstick that I've recently fallen back in love with: Urban Decay's Lipstick in Tease!

I bought this way back when Urban Decay was still readily available in Boots (they seem to have moved out of Boots, I'm not sure when this happened, but I'm not happy about it D':) and we had a minor fling, only to have my interest caught by something else a few weeks later. Poor old UD lipstick got put in the make up case and forgotten about. Skip to two (maybe three - I'm so going to die of old make up poisoning someday...) years later, and I find this while rooting about through my old make up. I try it on again for old time's sake, and boom, I'm back in love, and I think this time it may be the real deal.

Jump!

Now, I don't know exactly why, but when I first tried this lipstick a few years ago, I loved the colour (and was going through the first flush of Urban Decay obsession) but it just never quite suited me. I think I was paler back then, if that's even possible, and so this was just a little too bright pink for me.

Now though, this looks so much better. I think the orange tones in the pink come out a lot more, and generally, I've been wearing brighter pinks recently, where before I shunned them for paler nudes, corals and oranges/reds.

Urban Decay says:

Leaving no shade unturned, our huge assortment of colors and textures tempt you to stray from an otherwise predicable palette. The luxuriously creamy formula nourishes and protects lips with Vitamins A, C, and E. Hyaluronic Spheres (found naturally in the body) are added to stimulate cellular function, prevent dehydration, and fill-in lines and wrinkles.

The design of this lipstick is just beautiful, and one of Urban Decay's triumphs of packaging visually. In terms of practicality though, there's a bit of a flaw with the handle - I had another of these lipsticks and the sword handle snapped off, meaning I had to hit it at a certain angle to get the lid to come off. Pretty as it is, I would probably swap the sword design for something sturdier, if it meant not living in fear of breakage every clumsy moment I have.

The formula of this is lovely, really moisturising, but not so creamy that it smudges easily or wears off really quick (*cough* Rouge Volupte *cough*). It smells quite heavily of creme brulee too, which I personally like, but I can imagine it irritating people who are more sensitive to strong fragrances.

It's a pinky coral colour, one which I feel leans more towards the pink side of things. It's nice for a pop of colour without being too bold or bright. I find the moisturising formula plumps my lips up a bit too, and makes them look fuller. I have perpetually chapped lips, and this doesn't cling to dry bits, and actually helps the dryness a bit too (although I wouldn't say it replaces a balm).

You can build this up for a stronger colour, but I prefer it quite sheer :) I'm never that brave colour-wise, preferring neutrals and nudes, so this is a lovely compromise between that and the bright lip colours on trend for Spring.

Urban Decay Lipsticks are available at House of Fraser and Debenhams for £13. I know this lipstick is old now - I bought it for £10!! Darn inflation :/ Beauty Box stocks the older shades here though for £6!

I really want to try the shades Naked and Midnight Cowboy!

For your Christian Dior library

christian dior books

It’s the last day of the Christian Dior fashion week and I am going to spend it talking about some of the best books and documentaries that would make a great addition to any fashion library. The most frustrating thing about fashion literature is that many books do not ever get published twice, so once the moment is gone, it’s very difficult to acquire a decent copy.

Whenever it comes to making the right choice, I tend to go for the titles that allow me to learn more about a person himself rather than his fashions. Although the designs and collections are indeed important and incredibly fascinating to study, it is the life and mind of a designer that I am most interested it because, lets face it, this is the best way to understand the magic behind each dress or accessory way beyond the beautiful facade.

Dior by Dior is a must-have. Written by Christian Dior himself, this book provides some valuable insides into his life and creative process. If you savour it, you will also come across some of the most wonderful quotes.

Dior by Alexandra Palmer is on top of my list for the amount of details and information it provides. It’s incredibly well researched and accompanied by beautiful images and documents from the house archives.

Christian Dior: The Biography by Marie-France Pochna is like a beautifully written novel that you can read in bed and lose yourself on its pages. In a way, it reminded me of Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie – there’s something special about the melody of wording, the way the story flows and takes you away on the journey through life of an extraordinary man, not just a designer.

Dior by Farid Chenoune is still on my wish list as the best book for beautiful images and details of the dresses created during the 60-year history of the house.

Christian Dior - The Man Behind The Myth is a documentary that includes a lot of the original footage and interviews. You can watch the trailer on youtube.

Weekend sign off

dior rene gruau

This week was definitely the most intense fashion week for me. Admittedly, I enjoyed creating my Dior posts, but a part of me, the tiniest part, wished I didn’t start this writing marathon. Combined with daily work and chores, it was just a little bit too much. Oh well… Dior deserves a few sleepless night, doesn’t he?

Tomorrow I will post the last story and today I just want to share a couple of links. The first one is for Dior Mag, an on-line diary of stories and videos available via official Dior website. If you love Christian Dior, you will definitely enjoy it. The other link is for Pathe website where you can view short videos from the archives – so very precious.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Always yours,
