If you live in the southern hemisphere then you are suffering of runny noses, cold feet and extreme laziness. It is winter time down here and same as Mondays, this season is well misunderstood. Although there are sunny days, usually you can expect freezing cold, grey, wet days where you start making up excuses to not get out of bed, and even cancelling plans for a Saturday night because you rather stay home than dress up (or dress less) to go out.
But looking at the bright side, winter can be pretty awesome.
1. You get to wear oversized knits, cover your hands with them, and truth be told, you can cover that muffin top that you are developing because you're 'hibernating' (has anyone ever used that excuse?). And I'm not saying to limit yourself to knitted sweaters, you can go for gloves, mittens, scarves (oh yes, scarves!), head bands, socks, etc. The list is long!
2. You can grab a book, sit on your preferred couch / cushion / spot and roll yourself in your blanket and read it for hours. No books? What about drawing? What about writing in your journal? What about playing in your iphone / ipod / ipad? You get the point.
3. Hot chocolate! Does this really need more detail or explanation? Ok, then, hot beverages in general. You get to prepare hot chocolate, grab a cup of coffee, some tea perhaps, even mulled wine! Even soup tastes better in winter (I'm not a fan of soup unless it's winter and I'm enjoying it while watching some TV show). I can't have these things during any other season because I just feel uncomfortable and warm. Which is a problem with coffee since I can't function without it. But you get the point. Warm those hands while holding that warm cup of ______ (insert hot beverage here) ______.
4. Warm, colourful socks! And this includes colourful stockings as well. I have found myself with quite a colourful collection of socks that go from green to pink to black with skulls. It's nice when I get together with my friends and we are all lying on the floor with a quite diverse collection of socks watching Friends and drinking chamomile tea while it's raining outside.
So yes, we have no Christmas season during winter, but that doesn't mean that we can't enjoy it. It's the season to enjoy hot drinks, catch up on your DVD collection and have movie marathons. Call your friends and have a sleepover like those old school days. Get up in the morning and prepare some pancakes, have some juice and watch another movie while looking at the foggy morning outside your window. Dance in your colourful socks!
