There's a first time for everything, and this time was my first time going to a Roller Derby Bout. If you have no idea about what's this game about, let me tell you something: some years ago I had no idea this game was real, and yes, I have to say that after watching Whip It then I understood there were people playing it. Still, I didn't understand the rules of the game. I remember that while in Argentina, my sis took me to the Argentinian RD League to watch them practice and take some photos. I was amazed. My sis then became the official photographer for the Peruvian RD League (which have just started). So, since she was coming to Melbourne she wrote the girls in the Victorian RD League and they gave her a press pass to take photos of the game. That was my first time I went to watch RD. Talking about some fem power here...
The game is quite intense, and the chicks are really something. You can see them fall and get bruises and be back on their feet (or wheels) really fast to continue what they were doing. And they have their fans! I was so excited there understanding how the game is played.
To resume the game (the way I understood), you have a Jammer which is the one that has the star on their helmets. She's the one that has to go one entire lap ahead of the other team's jammer to score a point. And there are the other girls plus their leader (forgot her name) that their role is to avoid the jammer from the other team to go ahead. So they block her as much as they can and let their team jammer to go ahead to score points. So as you can see from the photos, it's quite tough. Jammer's have to be very fast, they have to go through a wall of tough girls that won't make it easier for her.
Plus, they have really cool names. I'm wondering what would my roller name be...
